United Food Bank Food Drive - The Mesa East Valley Chapter supports the United Food Bank with a quarterly food drive. Members and guests are encouraged to bring donations to the December 2011 food drive membership meeting. Valley of the Sun United Way Non-Profit Organization Financial Review - Support the Valley of the Sun United Way by reviewing the financial statements of its agency non-profit organizations. The training for reviewing agency financial compliance documents is held in October at Valley of the Sun United Way. Training participants will receive 1 CPE credit for “Not-for-Profit Accounting and Reporting” for attending. An additional hour of the training session will be dedicated to explaining Valley of the Sun United Way’s Community Investment Process and the related importance of these financial reviews. Thank you to all the VITA volunteers during the last tax season! Volunteers at the Chandler locations served over 1,000 residents and helped bring $1,338,706 in refunds to members of our community. Consider helping your local VITA location next year. Training usually begins in December/January for the tax season.
American Heart Association Mission: Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
By 2020, to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent.
In 1999 the American Heart Association set a bold 10-year goal: To reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010. We achieved the reduction in deaths ahead of schedule and made substantial progress against three of the six risk factors. Because of this success, the Board of Directors approved a 2020 Impact Goal. This new goal looks beyond helping people reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke by focusing on helping them build stronger health and a better quality of life.
The Greater Phoenix Metro Heart Walk event will be held on February 25 at 9:00 a.m. at Tempe Beach Park (between Mill Ave and Rio Salado Pkwy). The Heart Walk is a non-competitive event including two different paths; a 5k Heart Walk and 1 mile Stroke Walk.
Join Team Captain Laura Mangan and ASWA members on the Number Crunchers Team for either the 1 mile or 5K or make a donation to support our team.
Financial Literacy Training - Members of the ASWA and IMA chapters support financial literacy efforts by sharing the FDIC Money Smart program with local non-profit organizations including Fresh Start Women's Foundation & Arizona Bridge to Independent Living. Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Phoenix Affiliate
The Komen Phoenix Affiliate was started by three members of the Junior League of Phoenix (JLP) to honor their friend who lost her life to breast cancer. In 1993, JLP and Banner Health partnered to bring the Race for the Cure® to Phoenix. That first Race drew 1,500 participants and raised $65,000. In 2010, we held the 18th Annual Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® and raised $2 million! This signature event draws thousands of survivors and supporters together each year to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, to honor those who have lost their battle with the disease, and to help raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

The Save the Family Foundation helps families in our community conquer homelessness and achieve life-long independence. They operate over 180 units of housing valley wide, provide transitional housing for homeless families and housing to keep working poor families stable through market adjusted rents. They focus on children and strive to create stability for homeless children through consistent housing, stable schooling, afterschool programs, tutoring and extracurricular activities. Save the Family Foundation provides a full array of support services to help our clients succeed. They offer financial literacy education, career development support, budgeting workshops, parenting classes and self-esteem coaching. Their clients’ successes include: high school diplomas, home ownership, full-time employment, college degrees, scholarships, good credit scores and savings accounts. This November, ASWA Mesa East Valley Chapter members prepared a Thanksgiving Basket for a local family. Visit www.savethefamily.org for more information on donation needs and volunteer opportunities.
